Brickopolis breaks world record with the Largest LEGO® Diorama on the planet
On 3 April 2025, Brickopolis in Lourinhã received the Guinness World Records certificate for its 70,614 m² masterpiece, dethroning the former Chinese champion with a respectable 23 m² lead. If this were a sack race, Portugal would have reached the finish line while China was still putting the sack together!
But what is a LEGO® diorama anyway?
Think of a diorama as a paused film – but made of colourful pieces.
It’s a static 3D scene that tells a story or recreates a place, all mounted on a base. No secret cardboard walls or fake bricks: here every roof, tree or dinosaur is 100 per cent LEGO®, without any internal support structure.
A journey through Portugal… in miniature
The giant (ironic, isn’t it?) Brickopolis diorama is a compact tourist itinerary:
- Dino Parque da Lourinhã, the only representation on display.
- The Nazaré wave – a version that fits on a shelf and doesn’t require an XXL board.
- Houses on the Costa Nova with their perfect, characteristic stripes.
- Lisbon Airport from the 1950s: with more controlled traffic than today.
- …and another village in the West, Feira Popular, medieval recreations and even pre-Expo 98 Lisbon.
All this accompanied by +1 200 mini figures that seem to have a life of their own (or at least very steady jobs).
Assembly worthy of a world championship
Hundreds of thousands of interlocking parts with no internal structure.
850 hours of construction over 9 months.
The dedication of a team of 25.
Brickopolis: theme park, museum and creativity centre
Part of Brickopolis, a pavilion with a permanent LEGO® exhibition that houses around five million pieces spread over an area of 750 m2, this diorama stands out as a collective work of art that demonstrates the power of imagination and construction. The exhibition is divided into three themed rooms, presenting collections such as
- ‘Star Wars’ or the “Wizarding School” based on the Harry Potter characters, in a first sensory room.
- In the main room you’ll find a huge city full of real and amusing little details, as well as replicas of world-famous monuments such as the Taj Mahal or the Colosseum in Rome.
- In the last room, all visitors are challenged to build their own proposals for the big city or to build their best car and put it to the test.
Why does this matter?
As well as putting Portugal on the record map, it shows how imagination + patience + LEGO® can create something that delights kids, grown-ups and even your uncle who only grumbles at Christmas.
‘The limit isn’t the sky, it’s the size of the table.’ – Brickolese proverb (which we just made up).
If you’re passing through Lourinhã, set aside a few hours (and lots of ‘wows!’) to visit Brickopolis. Just don’t forget to take an extra battery in your mobile phone – this diorama was made to be photographed… photographed a lot!
